COMPARISON OF RETROGRADE NAILING AND BRIDGE PLATING IN THE TREATMENT OF EXTRA-ARTICULAR DISTAL FEMUR FRACTURES

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare retrograde intramedullary nailing and bridge plating methods in the treatment of distal extra-articular femur fractures. Material and Method: Between 2015 and 2022, 20 patients underwent bridge plating and 15 patients underwent retrograde nailing for extra-articular distal femur fractures were analyzed retrospectively and functional outcomes were evaluated. The mean follow-up period was 28.7 (range: 18-41) months in the plate group and 23.7 (range: 14-53) months in the nail group. Results: Mean union time was 25.7 (range: 12-72) weeks in the plate group and 22.3 (range: 12-52) weeks in the nail group. The demographics of age (p = 0.335) and gender (p = 0.412) in both groups were similar. Non union was seen in 2 patients in the plate group and in 1 patient in the nail group. Delayed union was seen in 1 patients in the plate group and in 1 patients in the nail group. Implant failure was seen in 1 patient in the plate group. No differences were found with respect topostoperative union time, malreduction, deep infection, hardware failure, operating time, knee pain, HSS score and range of knee movement. The mean intraoperative blood loss was significantly higher in the plate group than in the nail group (p=0.015). Conclusion: In the treatment of extra-articular distal femur fractures, the results of bridge plating and nailing methods were similar. Both methods can be used in the treatment of these type of fractures.
